As a kid, you couldn’t slow Phil Kerr down! Whether he was racing motocross, skateboarding, wakeboarding or snowboarding, he was active outside all day every day. With nature as his playground, he never saw himself in a suit or behind a desk; but rather at the top of the podium as a professional athlete. Fate, on the other hand, had a different plan for Phil, confining him to a wheelchair after a battle with cancer at a young age. Not that that stopped him!
Phil has been pushing the limits of adaptive wakebaording for years now and in 2016 he won first place at the 2016 adaptive wakeboard world championships.
On top of wakeboarding, extreme sports like skydiving, mono-skiing, or going fast on dirtbikes or side by sides, Phil has added, entrepreneur and philanthropist to his resume with Canadian clothing brand Twisted Mounty and charitable sock brand WEBEUS Community.”
Workshop Description for “My Adaptive Life”
My Adaptive Life presentation is my story of growing up as a “regular” kid that loved sports and anything extreme to having my life changing forever. At age 13 I was diagnosed with cancer and paralyzed from the waist down. Just when I thought I couldn’t deal with it anymore and wanted to give up, an opportunity was thrown my way. With a lot of courage, I took the chance and it changed my life. I went from having a negative outlook on my situation to a positive. I started challenging myself to not let anything stop me. I have become a world champion adaptive wakeboarding, adaptive sports athlete, a motivational speaker, and I have started my own businesses. I am loving life. I connect with students, inspire them to challenge themselves to be their best without allowing anything to get in their way, to motivate and support each other, and most of all, to love life and have fun.
