At age 13, Phil’s life went from participating in action sports and living a wild engergetic lifestyle, to being stuck at Toronto Sick Kid’s Hostpital with cancer. He was paralyzed from the waist down and crushed. His life had ended. He couldn’t do anything that he used to do. He was stuck and couldn’t change anything about it. He wanted to give up and not be alive. After years of denying what happened to him, and waiting for a miracle to give him his feet back, it was time acceptance. Phil was given a life changing opportunity that took him a lot of courage to embrace. But with the support of his amazing family and friends, he took the chance to change his life and make a difference. From that point on, his life was forever changed. Through life experiences, he has learned to not let anything stop him and that there is always a solution to move forward and remain happy. He learned to set, chase and accomplish his goals, how to encourage and inspire, spread happiness and live the good life.
Workshop Description for “My Adaptive Life”
My Adaptive Life presentation is my story of growing up as a “regular” kid that loved sports and anything extreme to having my life changing forever. At age 13 I was diagnosed with cancer and paralyzed from the waist down. Just when I thought I couldn’t deal with it anymore and wanted to give up, an opportunity was thrown my way. With a lot of courage, I took the chance and it changed my life. I went from having a negative outlook on my situation to a positive. I started challenging myself to not let anything stop me. I have become a world champion adaptive wakeboarding, adaptive sports athlete, a motivational speaker, and I have started my own businesses. I am loving life. I connect with students, inspire them to challenge themselves to be their best without allowing anything to get in their way, to motivate and support each other, and most of all, to love life and have fun.
